MASTERPIECE | Official Selection @ Nosakhari Film Festival 2024

Four young men attend a private viewing at an exhibition. They are there to support and celebrate their friend’s academic and creative success in his Modern & Contemporary Arts (MA).

When Simbai (artist/ graduate) leaves the room before revealing his work to his friends. They find his prize winning masterpiece and are left to observe, and deconstruct Simbai’s artwork before he comes back.

But – what the hell is it?

Runyararo Mapfumo

Runyararo Mapfumo has navigated an impressive trajectory in the film industry, progressing from development roles to post-production and establishing herself as a talented writer and director. Her journey includes directing a series of well-received shorts, which led to the notable opportunity to direct episodes of Netflix specials Sex Education Season 3 in 2021 and Kaos Season 1 in 2024. Her achievements earned her a BAFTA nomination for Emerging Talent in 2022: Fiction. Inspired by a passion for genre fiction, Runyararo is now developing her debut feature, a futuristic science fiction film rooted in African mythology, in collaboration with Film4 and her production company, DessyMak Productions.

In her own words, Runyararo describes her love for film as a driving force behind her career, inspired by her first experience on a set and the collaborative nature of directing. Supported by her family, she aims to create impactful work that uses storytelling as a powerful tool to explore familiar themes from new perspectives. Excited about her involvement with BAFTA Breakthrough, she values the recognition as a milestone that highlights her progress and offers new opportunities for growth in longform storytelling.
