Making Authentic Art – Mark McClure | CYD #14 – Nosakhari

Mark McClure has been an artist in his heart for as long as he can remember. While pragmatism led him to pursue a career in design, his desire to create art has only grown stronger with time and now he uses his design training to experiment with geometric murals, prints and 3D works.

Intrigued by the grey area crossover between art and design, Mark’s interest in architecture is evidenced by his fascination with the spatial context of art – how one piece can be called a mural on a floor or street art on a wall. Testing those boundaries – whether in personal projects or commercial commissions – is what his work is all about. Whether it’s his wood mosaic murals, brightly coloured wall-mounted sculptures or framed mosaic squares, Mark’s distinct style remains recognisable throughout.

While he’s conscious that it can be hard to stay true to yourself in the face of pressures to cater to what sells, he is determined never to sell out his intuitive artistic direction. For Mark, artistic integrity is doing what feels right in the moment, and the creative act is not a choice but a compulsion.
